Cerro Alto

Cerro Alto

Meghan and I hiked Cerro Alto yesterday. Total distance was 5.9 miles round trip to the summit. Our goal was to break in our new backpacking boots which we did. Cerro Alto is the highest peak in San Luis Obispo county. We could see all 7 sisters, Montana de Oro, Morro Bay, Los Osos, and SLO from the top. We would have been able to see more if it wasn’t so hazy. If you’re thinking about hiking Cerro Alto it cost $5 to park.

Big Sur: Sykes Hot Springs

Sykes Hot Springs

This last weekend Meghan and I when on an overnight backpack trip to Sykes hot springs in Big Sur. It was a 10 mile trek each way. The total elevation gained and lost was 2380 feet and 1490 feet respectively. We were both extremely tired after the two day affair. The hot springs at 100 deg F felt great after hiking 10 miles. We actually got one all to ourselves which we heard was not likely because it’s such a popular destination. We were lucky to get a camp site as most of the sites were taken when we got there.

Wildflower 2007

The weekend before last I competed in the olympic distance triathlon course at Wildflower. This was my second triathlon but first olympic distance. The experience was amazing. The challenge, excitment, and competitive atmosphere all added up to a great weekend. Meghan and I camped out with the medical team for two nights. They are a fun AND loud group.

I ended up placing 20th out of 57 people in the 20-24 year old age group. I finished in 2:55:21 and my goal was to beat 3 hours. The triathlon consisted of the following events in order:

1. 1.5K Swim
2. 40K Bike
3. 10K Run

In the photo above is me and Andy (the competition in my age group).

Motorola’s Dumb Phone

Motorola’s Dumb Phone
A new mobile phone that’s rather simple bucks the trend toward more complicated, power-hungry devices.
By Kevin Bullis

This is the phone I’ve been waiting for. No camera, no color screen, no internet, no frills! This is just a phone folks, nothing more. Consumers today are so caught up by the amount of features electronics offer no matter that more features = more bugs. The cool thing about this phone is that it has an E-Ink display instead of an LCD. An E-Ink display only uses power when the screen needs to be updated. An LCD is constantly using power because it needs to be backlit in order for you to read it. The target audience is developing countries like India because the phone is cheap and can be charged via riding a bike. It probably won’t be sold in the US since there is no market for a simple phone that works…oh well, someday.

Survived Mt. Whitney

October 28, 2006 on 5:23 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

I survived, barely. Andy Joe and I hiked Mt. Whitney last Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. It was by far the most difficult physical activity I have tried. Andy compared it to running a marathon by saying that climbing Whitney was harder. There was a lot of snow and we definitely needed crampons and ice axes (we didn’t have). It was really cold! I’ll give the condensed version here and possibly a more detailed version later on.

Day 1

Arrived Whitney Portal @ 2pm. Camped at “Upper Boy scout Lake” @ 6pm.

Start Elevation: 8200ft
End Elevation: 11200ft
Distance Hiked: 3.2 miles
Altitude Climbed: 3000ft

Day 2

Hiked to “Iceberg Lake” then up and over “Whitney-Col Pass.” Camped at “Guitar Lake” @ 3pm

Start Elevation: 11200ft
End Elevation: 11200ft
Distance Hiked: 4.4 miles
Altitude Climbed: 2100ft

Day 3

Hiked on “John Muir Trail” to junction with “Whitney Trail.” Summit Whitney. Hiked back to parking lot and then drove home after some pizza and beer in Lone Pine.

Start Elevation: 11200ft
End Elevation: 14491ft
Distance Hiked: 16 miles
Altitude Climbed: 3291ft

Dim Sum and REI

October 4, 2006 on 6:24 pm | In Uncategorized | 1 Comment

This last weekend I had an unusual experience. Mike and I skipped out on the Parkfield mountain bike race and took a day trip down to LA to visit Jackson and REI. Jackson took us out to the “crazy dim sum” restaurant for lunch. The place was huge…Capacity for at least 200 people. The tables were crammed together with aisles in between for the mobile food carts to travel. My first thought was “hectic.” People everywhere talking loudly in different languages while the waiters aggressively ask if you want the platter of mystery meat sitting on their cart. It took a while just to get my bearings. Jackson didn’t dabble and proceeded to order chicken feet from one of the carts whisking by. The psychological factor was difficult to get overcome but I finally relented and bit off a toe. Not bad but very, very weird. Later I nawed on the ankle a little but the novelty was gone by then.

Afterwards we all went to REI and spent about three hours looking over supplies for the Jackson Hole ski trip this upcoming January. Possible -36 degrees at night…Hurray for down!

Ride and Fire

September 19, 2006 on 8:33 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

Went on a nice 14 mile mountain ride after work and barely made it home before dark. Bummed the days are getting shorter but I have a light so looks like it’s night rides pretty soon. Today’s ride is mapped out at http://www.routeslip.com/map.php?map=4439 .

Yesterday there was a lot of smoke in the sky from the big fire east of us. There was an eerie orange tinge from the smoke filtering the sun. The sunset was blood red.

Yet Another "sorry i haven’t bloged, LOL" Post

September 17, 2006 on 11:30 am | In Uncategorized | No Comments

OK, I just need to blog SOMETHING to get over the mind block of not having blogged in a long time. This post is pretty much pointless but it has to be. No picture. No explanation of that last X months. No substantial content. Nothing. Just a post to get up to date. That’s it….asta.
